Employee Spotlight: Sarah Hartmann, Design Assistant

Sarah Hartmann brings a thoughtful approach to projects, combining her passion for creativity, problem-solving, and designing spaces that spark joy. In February 2026, she joined Perspective Cabinetry & Design, and we’re glad she did. As a Design Assistant, she supports the design team and helps create spaces that reflect each client’s vision.

What’s your design background or training?

“I graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a BS in Architectural Studies with an emphasis in Interior Design, and a minor in Construction Management and Engineering Sustainability. During my time there, I participated in several research and design initiatives, including Missouri’s Prison Transformation Project, where our team worked alongside prison staff and inmates to explore ways to improve living conditions within cells and common areas.

“I also competed in national design competitions, such as the U.S. Department of Energy’s Solar Decathlon, where I contributed to a project focused on sustainably retrofitting a historic building in Columbia, Missouri, into a community center.

“Outside of school, I gained hands-on experience staging display homes and working as a materials library organizer for a commercial furniture company. These experiences exposed me to a wide range of design applications.”

How would you describe your design philosophy?

“I believe in a human-centered design approach, placing the needs, experiences, and goals of the people using the space at the heart of every decision. Understanding a client’s vision through open communication and collaboration allows for more thoughtful problem-solving, space planning, and creative design solutions.

“I read a book in college called Design by Change, written by Tim Brown, and it forever changed the way I thought about design. It deeply describes and elaborates on ‘design thinking,’ a non-linear method to design that fosters innovation and problem-solving through deep analysis and examples. The book heavily emphasizes the importance of empathy and truly understanding the users of the space and the impact designers have on people’s lives.”

Tim Brown wrote, “The evolution from design to design thinking is the story of the evolution from the creation of products to the analysis of the relationship between people and products, and from there to the relationship between people and people.”

What is your process when starting with a new client?

“Every project begins with a conversation, then a meeting either at the showroom or in the client’s home. An in-home meeting allows us to take measurements, walk through the space, and discuss the client’s goals, style preferences, and lifestyle needs. Showroom meetings are equally valuable because they give clients the opportunity to see and interact with materials, finishes, and products firsthand. These initial meetings help establish a clear vision and create a foundation for the project.”

What part of the design process do you enjoy most?

“My favorite part of the design process is the brainstorming and problem-solving stage. I enjoy exploring multiple design concepts and layout options to find the best solution for each client and space. It’s especially rewarding to watch a client become excited as their vision begins to take shape and to collaborate with them as we refine the design to create a space that truly feels like their own.”

What design trends are you loving right now?

“Design trends are constantly evolving, and many styles eventually find their way back into popularity. I’ve always been drawn to older homes with character, craftsmanship, and unique architectural details. Right now, I’m excited to see the return of mid-century modern design and furniture, with its warm wood tones, bold patterns and textures, and rich colors.

“That said, I believe great design goes beyond trends. Every style has elements worth appreciating, and the best spaces are those that reflect the personality and lifestyle of the people who live in them.”

What’s your ultimate goal when a client sees their finished space?

“My goal extends beyond creating a space that simply looks beautiful. I want clients to feel that their finished space reflects who they are while also supporting how they live every day. The most successful designs are both visually appealing and highly functional, providing lasting value and enjoyment for years to come.”

What drew you to join Perspective Cabinetry & Design?

“I joined Perspective Cabinetry & Design because I was excited by the opportunity to learn more about residential design, particularly kitchen and bath design, while working directly with clients throughout the process. I also wanted to stay in the St. Louis area and was drawn to the collaborative environment of a local company.

“One of the things I appreciate most is the people I work with. I enjoy coming to work each day, collaborating with talented designers, and learning from a group of people who are not only skilled professionals but also genuinely great individuals.”
