Your Guide to Stock vs. Semi-Custom vs. Custom Cabinets

Cabinets are one of the most important decisions in a kitchen project. From ready-to-assemble options to fully handcrafted cabinetry, each type offers a different balance of cost, materials, craftsmanship, and lead times. Understanding the differences between stock, semi-custom, and custom cabinets will help you choose the option that best fits your budget, lifestyle, and vision for your space.

Stock Cabinets

Stock cabinets, also known as ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets, consist of components that are mass-produced and stored until purchased. They can be ordered either fully assembled or as individual components for assembly after delivery.

  • Availability: Their ready-to-ship design keeps costs low and lead times short, typically ranging from 1 to 3 weeks. However, there is little to no flexibility in sizing or finish selections.
  • Construction: Stock cabinets are available only in standard dimensions, usually in 3-inch increments, and cannot be modified after manufacturing. As a result, installation often requires fillers to eliminate gaps and achieve a finished appearance.
  • Applications: This type of cabinetry is an excellent option for rental properties, secondary spaces such as basement storage areas, or homeowners looking to refresh a kitchen before listing a property for sale.

Semi-Custom Cabinets

Semi-custom cabinets begin with stock cabinet bases and allow for modifications before production starts. They offer greater design flexibility, with a wide variety of door styles, finishes, and configuration options available.

  • Availability: Lead times generally range from 6 to 8 weeks, as this lets manufacturers produce cabinets to custom specifications while maintaining efficient production processes.
  • Customization: Cabinet width, height, and depth can be modified to create a more seamless fit within the available space. Features such as glass-front doors, open shelving, appliance garages, and appliance panels are commonly offered, along with interior accessories including waste bins, pull-out spice racks, and cutlery dividers.
  • Construction: Semi-custom cabinetry is available in both framed and frameless (full-access) construction, with optional upgrades to plywood box construction. Full-extension drawer glides and soft-close doors are standard features.
  • Applications: This type of cabinetry is ideal for homeowners who want the personalization and enhanced functionality of custom cabinets while maintaining a more budget-friendly price point.

Custom Cabinets

Custom cabinets are built by skilled craftsmen to the homeowner’s exact specifications. There is complete design freedom, allowing for solutions that accommodate unique layouts, architectural details, and highly personalized design preferences.

  • Availability: Since each project is built from the ground up, lead times typically range from 16 to 20 weeks, and custom cabinetry requires the most investment.
  • Customization: Homeowners can choose from a wide range of door styles, finishes, and premium wood species, including rift-cut oak, mahogany, and walnut.
  • Construction: Cabinet construction can be framed or frameless with full-extension drawer glides and soft-close doors as standard features. Interior storage solutions can be tailored to specific needs, such as custom knife blocks, charging station drawers, dedicated spice storage, and specialized pull-out organizers.
  • Applications: Custom cabinetry is an excellent choice for discerning homeowners who value premium craftsmanship, complete personalization, and truly one-of-a-kind results.
