For many people remodeling their kitchens, adding an island is a top priority. Beyond adding extra space for cooking and storage, islands often serve as the hub of the kitchen, providing space for socializing and even eating. You might be surprised by the wide variety of kitchen island styles, though. Choosing the right one depends on everything from the available floor space to how you plan to use your island, but here is a guide to the most common styles to help you narrow down the selection.

What Are the Most Common Kitchen Island Styles?

1. Full-Function Islands

If you have space, a fully functioning kitchen island can essentially become the equivalent of a second kitchen. These islands are fully connected with electricity and water, and typically feature cooktops, sinks, and prep space, as well as additional storage or space for appliances underneath. Many are also large enough to provide seating. They are the most expensive option and require the most available floor space, but they significantly increase efficiency and available workspace in the kitchen.

2. Tiered Islands

These permanent islands are designed to provide space for cooking prep and eating. The cooking side is counter height (36 inches high) while the eating side is bar height (42 inches). These islands are flexible and can provide storage, as well as built-in appliances or sinks. That said, unless the island is especially large, the cooking and eating surfaces are likely to be narrow, and may not provide as much extra counter space as you might like.

3. Portable Kitchen Islands

At the other end of the spectrum from the fully functioning kitchen island is the portable island. This type covers several different styles, from wheeled carts with drop-down counters and shelving to counter-height tables that only provide an extra surface for cooking and eating. These islands are not permanently installed and can be moved around as needed, so they don't require water or electrical hookups. They are also the least expensive option. That said, they offer extra storage and work surface and are ideal for smaller spaces.
