Perhaps you want to expand your bathroom to make space for a spa tub or to install a sizable cabinetry system. Maybe you’re planning extensive work to bring the entire room into the 21st century. To make the process as seamless as possible, use the following tips to prepare for your upcoming bathroom remodel.

How to Get Your Bathroom Ready for Remodeling

1. Determine the Project’s Timeline

Discuss how long the project will likely take with your remodeling contractor, such as a few days or a week. If you intend to stay in your home and keep using the bathroom, come up with a schedule everyone in the household must follow to avoid project delays. Depending on how long the remodel will take and whether you have additional bathrooms, you may want to arrange other accommodations, such as staying with friends or family.

2. Clean Up

Clean and disinfect your toilet, shower, and tub as a courtesy to the remodeling contractor, especially if replacing all of them is part of the project. Cleaning prevents dealing with unpleasant odors, soap scum, and other grime that makes the job less than pleasant. Your contractor will appreciate your efforts.

3. Remove Everything

Take everything out of the bathroom to keep belongings damage-free and avoid tripping hazards. Remove items from your shower/bath enclosure, medicine cabinet, and all other drawers, including toiletries, medications, and towels. Also, put bathroom rugs somewhere else and take down all decor items. Everything must go, including the toilet wand.

4. Create a Clear Path

Ensure the path from your front door to the job site is clear for the contractors. Find places for toys and anything else that’s in the way. Consider putting down tarps, drop cloths, or similar floor coverings along the path so that the contractors aren’t tracking dirt into your home every day.

5. Turn the Water Off

Turn the water off on the first day of the bathroom remodel if it will involve plumbing work. Another courteous gesture, shutting the water off saves time because the contractor won’t have to do it. If you’re not sure whether you need to turn the water off, talk to your contractor a few days before the start date.
