quartz countertop makes a stunning addition to your kitchen. In addition to being supremely attractive, the material is durable, nonporous, and a valuable long-term investment. However, because it primarily consists of natural stone, it requires a bit of maintenance to keep it looking its best. Here's a closer look at how to protect quartz surfaces.

How to Care for Your Quartz Countertop

1. Guard Against Heat & Impacts

Quartz is very sturdy, but you shouldn't treat it as impervious to damage. Quartz can withstand temperatures to about 300 degrees F, but the pigments and resins within the countertop are only rated to about 150 degrees. Protect the surface against heat by always using a trivet or hot pad before you place a pot on it straight from the stove. To avoid cracks, never use it as a surface on which to hammer something, and always use a cutting board when chopping food.

2. Clean Spills Promptly

Quartz is mostly nonporous, which means it doesn't absorb liquids quickly. Nevertheless, it's important to wipe up spills quickly to avoid stains setting in. This is particularly important when it comes to acidic substances, such as orange and grape juice, soft drinks, vegetable oil, and wine. Wipe them up using a soft cloth or sponge before they have a chance to dry.

3. Avoid Bleach & Ammonia

Cleaning products that contain bleach or ammonia can damage the stone, while regular use of dish soap dulls the appearance. Be wary of degreasers and oven cleaners as well, as they're often highly acidic. Similarly, avoid acidic natural cleaners like lemon juice and vinegar.

Instead, choose a commercial cleaner that's specially formulated for natural stone. This will protect the surface and shine.
